What is Intercostal Neuritis?
Intercostal neuritis is often referred to as intercostal neuralgia. It occurs when there is pain amongst the intercostal nerves surrounding the ribs. Such nerves originate from the spinal cord.
What are the signs and symptoms of Intercostal Neuritis?
The signs and symptoms of intercostal neuritis is an uncomfortable pain, often felt around one’s ribs. The quality of discomfort and pain is typically sharp and burning. The pain may radiate from front to back. Certain activities may exacerbate the pain such as repetitive motions or certain stretches.
What causes Intercostal Neuritis?
Intercostal Neuritis results from inflammation or disruption to the intercostal nerves, which reside below the ribcage. Often times, an event such as trauma or and infection such as Varicella-Zoster, Shingles, can lead to it. Commonly, there is no known cause. This is termed idiopathic intercostal neuritis.
How is Intercostal Neuritis diagnosed?
Intercostal Neuritis is diagnosed through a patient’s clinical presentation and physical examination techniques. If warranted, imaging modalities can be utilized.
How is Intercostal Neuritis treated?
Intercostal Neuritis is managed and treated through the implementation over the counter topical creams or patches. Certain stretches or exercises can also aid in management. Additionally, prescription medications can be utilized if indicated.
